About

Hi, I’m Thomas.

I’m a visual artist working primarily with watercolor, ink, and charcoal.

I grew up around visual artists who supported me (b. Minneapolis, 1983), welcomed me into their studios, shared materials, and spent many hours teaching me.

My grandfather graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He worked as a painter and art director for newspapers. My mother has a Master’s in graphic design and was a professional weaver. Her yarn tapestries are in collections across the United States.

Growing up in this environment, I spent years drawing. In high school, I stopped to focus on becoming both a professional musician and a software engineer.

Twenty years later, driven by the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, I found an online course by storyboard artist Alex Hillkurtz about sketching with ink and watercolor. This inspired me to start sketching again and sparked a new passion for watercolor.

I then completed a year-long online mentorship with master watercolorist Andy Evansen, which helped me build a strong foundation in painting.

I divide my time between painting outdoors and developing work in the studio from reference and observation.

My paintings lean toward an impressionistic approach, focusing on simple shapes, strong value relationships, and a poetic sense of atmosphere.

I aim to create images that invite viewers to slow down, interpret the scene in their own way, and connect it with their own experiences.

In the coming years, I plan to create many series of larger watercolor paintings that explore city scenes, rural landscapes, and more.
